What is Tunneling and How Do I Prevent It?

The first burn of your candle is the most important—not just for experiencing the incredible fragrance of your new H&D Luxury Aromas candle, but also for ensuring a long-lasting, even burn. To prevent "tunneling," make sure to burn your candle long enough during the first use so that the melted wax reaches all the way to the edges of the vessel.

What is Tunneling?

Tunneling happens when only the center of the candle melts and burns down, leaving a ring of unburned wax around the edges. This can shorten the candle's lifespan and prevent you from getting the most out of your purchase.

How to Prevent Tunneling

To keep tunneling at bay, follow these simple tips:

  • Burn it right the first time: Always let the wax pool reach the sides of the container before extinguishing the flame.
  • Avoid drafts: Placing your candle in a breezy or overly cool environment can cause uneven burning.
  • Trim the wick: Before each use, trim the wick to about 1/8 to 1/4 inch to maintain an even flame.

Fixing Tunneling

Already noticing tunneling? Don’t worry—there are ways to fix it!

  • Use a candle warmer to gently heat and even out the wax.
  • Wrap the top of the candle with aluminum foil (leaving an opening in the center) while burning to help distribute heat more evenly.
  • Rotate the candle periodically during burning to ensure an even melt.

By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a clean, even burn and get the most out of your H&D Luxury Aromas candle!
